When I Grow Up

Just a little update here! A levels… Well lets not go there…

As of now, here’s an essay I wrote which won me the second prize in an essay competition, an IPOD Shuffle =D Enjoy reading it!

When I grow up, I hope to see a Singapore with citizens speaking the true language of English, a Singapore with a true national icon and a Singapore that is truly cosmopolitan which can perform well internationally.

Currently

We’re the city with the lors

We’re the city with the lahs

We’re the city with the hors

And the ai-yo-yos!

Today Singapore is well known for its Singlish. Just speak using the ever popular lahs and lors, and global citizens will know that we come from Singapore. Although some see this as something like a national pride, I would like to beg to differ with this. English, as we know, is the global language, thus if we continue to speak it in such a manner, there might be a possibility of a communication breakdown between Singaporeans and the rest of the world. People from other countries like China are beginning to see the importance of this as they start brushing up their English Language, thus we too should do something about it before it is too late. If we are insistent on keeping Singlish, I foresee a bleak and dull future for Singapore as others begin to overtake us in terms of economic development and there is nothing much we can do about it. Thus, when I grow up, the Singapore I would like to see would be a country filled with citizens that are affluent in this language of English.

Currently

We’re the city with the greens

We’re the city with the stress

But what’s our Singapore icon?

It’s anybody’s guess

The Singapore I would like to see of the future should be filled with unique buildings and structures that are “uniquely Singapore” Some choose to argue that we already have our “uniquely Singapore” structures, but a walk around Singapore will reveal that all we have done is to try to imitate other countries and build what’s known as their national icons. Our Singapore Flyer is attributed to the London Eye, and the integrated resorts are attributed to well, Las Vegas. The durian and merlion are not exactly seen as national icons as the world does not acknowledge them, thus what is? Perhaps this is due to the problem of a brain drain. If we were to start thinking out of the box and start coming up with entirely new concepts which is possible, the Singapore of the future will be seen as a building with unique structures that capture the attention of the world, and the true Singapore icon will be found J

Currently

We say we want the golds

And we want to set the stage

But when foreign talents intervene

We go all red with rage

The Singapore I would like to see of the future should also be more diversified and globalized. Currently, Singapore is just in its developing stages of being a true globalized city as even though we are developed, we as Singaporeans have not truly accepted the idea of foreign talent. We have got to start facing the fact that Singapore is a small country and we need manpower, so foreign talent is indeed a necessary area in which we should look into. I know it is a hard fact to accept, and I myself have had my own doubts accepting it – especially since it seems as if the introduction of this policy has seemingly made us more inferior with them “stealing places in our society” However, we have to accept the fact that part of the reason why our country is prospering is due to them. As such, we should not view them as thieves or nuisances. Its time to change this mindset and we have to acknowledge the fact that competition is necessary to push a country forward, thus we should see this as an attempt to drive us to to perform to our best. If this is achieved, Singapore will finally be the Singapore I would like to see when I grow up – a true cosmopolitan city that performs well in the global arena.

Current Song: Now Or Never – High School Musical

Sixteen, sixteen, sixteen more hours till we meet our doom
Sixteen, sixteen, sixteen more hours till it all begins

The way we studied hard
is what we prepared for!
It all comes down to right now
it’s up to us

This is the last time
to get it right
This is the last chance
to make it or not

We gotta show
what we’re all about

Work together

High School Musical songs are indeed rather inspiring don’t you think so?

Say hello to the big A’s

There’s no backing away now
Its now or never

You’re The New Classic

Current Song: New Classic – Drew Seeley & Selena Gomez

Its 4 days to the A Levels.

I know I shouldnt be blogging, but well it helps me relax! HAHA! We all need a stress-reliever moment, and having said that I am sure all of us have our very own means of relaxing and making sure the brain doesnt end up exploding into bits of fragmented pieces. Gross isnt it?

In the midst of this stressful period, I watched an online movie to reward myself from all the slogging for the A’s, and a particular story caught my attention. I love watching musicals, and there was one Disney movie called “Another Cinderella Story” starring the one the only Selena Gomez.

Know who Selena Gomez is? She’s the current rising star of disney. Friends, if you still thought of Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff or even Demi Lovato as I mention the current tween queen, woops its time to update a little bit! Hahaha…

So anyway, the title might sound a little familiar cause of the movie taking the plot from the original movie starring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray, but trust me on this one, this movie is alot alot better than the original. I mean, I loved the original movie alot too but when I saw this rendition, I found that it conveyed the intentions of love and others really well. This movie also has many interesting scenes ranging from dance scenes to music scenes and even a dance battle between the two main actors of the movie!

I guess I havent mentioned who the guy is yet, but he’s the guy who sang for Zac Efron in High School Musical and gosh, his voice is really nice to listen to! Its amazing to note exactly how well his on-screen chemistry with Selena Gomez is despite him being a whole ten years older than her.

Yes guys, Selena Gomez is SIXTEEN! =X

Watch this movie, its a fairy tale come true movie for the ladies, a high upbeat movie for the guys and I’m pretty sure both genders would have to agree that Selena Gomez and Drew Seeley are indeed eye-candies to behold.. A pretty good strategy from Disney indeed! I’m currently addicted to the soundtrack which is just as great! =D

Look out for the Soundbites segment soon, my next recommended song will be from this soundtrack!

The Cup Of Life – Ricky Martin

7 days to the A Levels. I know I should be studying, but well somehow I just cannot force myself to sit down and study throughout. I’ll just study, get bored after about an hour, take a break and move on studying again. Hmph…

Alrightey, moving on to a few things I want to update on, starting with soccer.

We all know I was no fan of soccer, but somehow the guys in my class managed to get me hooked on it. I caught my first ever full soccer match two days back with the competitors being Manchester United and Everton. I somehow thought that this would be a piece of cake, but how wrong I was. Everton played impressively well, and Manchester United could only manage to struggle out alive with a 1-1 draw. Notice I used the word struggle. They were seriously struggling, cause Everton was controlling the game.

The other shocker for soccer was how Liverpool managed to outwit Chelsea and triumph 1-0 when Chelsea was playing HOME! And there goes Chelsea’s streak of 86 home victories just like that, crushed by Liverpool.

I guess soccer is a fluid game. There’s no determining who’d do well cause there can be a chance where the team you are rooting for will fumble just like that. For one, Hull City is playing really well! The team that emerged 92nd in the last season is in 3rd position now. WOW!

Now the only thing I’m lacking is actually playing the game itself. I’m an absolute loser when it comes to soccer, I just cannot kick a ball in the direction I want it to. I guess we all are good at different aspects, and soccer is definitely not my game, although I make an attempt to play it with my classmates. HAHA!

For all you guys out there, here’s probably one reason why I’m not a soccer player. I’ll probably end up…

HUMILIATED!

HAHA CYA GUYS!

Life’s Like That

Life’s Like That – Natasha Beddingfield

You know life’s being a total irritant when it starts playing games with you. When it gives you two crossroads and expects you to pick one, knowing that the outcome would be a win lose situation. When you know that one’s happiness has to be sacrificed for another’s misery, yet you’re utterly confused over what to do.

Whoever said that life was a bed of roses?
He must have been one naive botanist!

RIHANNA IS COMING!

Pon De Replay – Rihanna

I just got some exciting news that got me all happy and excited.. HAHA! And that news is that…

RIHANNA IS COMING TO SINGAPOREEEE!!!!!!!!

Pure gorgeousness topped with an angelic voice… ahhh! =X I like her songs, except for a few like that umbrella song as well as when she duo-ed with Maroon Five.. I still think they would have done better as a solo group instead of incorporating her into the group! Either wayy, she still rocks!

Yupp she’ll be coming on 13th november… what a bummer! Smack in the middle of the A Levels… and as such I doubt I’ll be able to go! HMPH!

I could be able to meet her, IF i made a placard stating “RIHANNA IS EVERYWHERE” and take photos with as many individuals as possible with it, and if I do win, I”ll meet her! Ah I really feel like doing that, maybe I will! LOL! The only drawback is that the A Levels are obstructing the date!

Silly A Levels! Seriously, I’d pick meeting Rihanna over A Levels ANYTIME, if only the A Levels didnt affect my future.

HAHA!

Diva Showdown

Posted in Uncategorized on October 20, 2008 by Zulhafiz

Inspired by SAHIRA, I too have come up with a post dedicated to trying out this new function on blogger. I think its a rather cool function, its about time this function was added to liven up wordpress! HAHA!

Sahira did a post on two boys, and she asked her readers to choose the song they preferred of the two. It was between Crush by David Archuletta and Lights Up by David Cook. Of course, Archie is currently leading in her polls! YAY! =D His songs are nice alright, so I predict he’ll be the overall winner of her poll!

Alright for mine I’m going to do something similar, yet this time round I need you guys to decide which of these three divas has the better song as well as the better comeback. They have been performing since we were young, and they all had their ups and downs, but question is, who has what it takes to be the true diva? Who bounced back well with new songs that proved their worth? Here are the three songs I’d like you guys to take a pick from:

CHRISTINA AGUILERA – KEEPS GETTING BETTER

PINK – SO WHAT

BRITNEY SPEARS – WOMANIZER

Yepp, three comeback tracks by three of the worlds most renounced female artists, all in the same month! Hahaha, personally if you asked me, I like all three of these songs! Lyrics wise, they’re a little rubbish, but the tunes are really very catchy and upbeat, I guess people wouldnt mind dancing to them at all! LOL!

If I reallly had to choose one song of the three, I’d say Womanizer by Britney Spears would be it. Its rather repetitive, but I feel the tune to it is really addictive and nice to listen to! I guess Britney Spears made a huge comeback into the music world. She shed her extra kilos to bare her body for this music video, and I cant believe she actually managed to accomplish her weight loss mission, which would prove impossible for the majority of us! Youtube the music video if you want, LOL!

Okay dont let me pollute your ideology, feel free to disagree with me! In fact, I think the other two songs are just as great. I LOVE So what by pink, its a really cute song which never fails to keep me happy, and Keeps Getting Better by Christina Aguilera is just as great too in fact, in terms of the tune!

Soo, Which would be your pick?

Time Of Your Life – David Cook

Before I forget, Song of the Week UPDATED! :)

The long awaited graduation post I wanted to put up but didnt have the time too. That day left me with mixed feelings..

1) Of Happiness cause I’m officially a JC graduate! FUN!

2) Of sadness cause I keep thinking of it as the last time I’m ever going to see my friends and class as one

3) Of anxiety cause it depicts the closeness to the big A Levels

Somehow there’s no one feeling that will dominate during graduation. All these feelings will just pop out and you’ll end up feeling more confused than ever, on whether you really want to graduate or just keep on staying put.

JC life has been a fulfilling one for me. I’ve had many ups and downs, although I must say that there were quite a significant number of big downs for me at this point of my life. I’ve had many happy moments, yet they were complemented with disappointing moments, moments where I felt that this was the final blow and that I could not take it any longer.

Friendship issues, had it. Failing issues, had it. High expectations I never met, had it.

Yet it was these people that made me persevere and press on, for without that, I would have long withdrawn from the scene, and only god knows where I would be now. So here I am to make a little graduation note for some of these people:

TO CLASS O706:
You guys have been the light that lit up my life whenever I saw no light at the other end. You guys guided me, crapped with me, helped me through and I really must thank you guys for all that you have done! Thank you for making lectures and tutorials more bearable with your hilarious jokes and actions. Thank you for all the sweets and chocolates that definitely helped keep me awake when I felt like dozing off. Thank you for all your notes, thank you for everything!

And to the certain few individuals from 06:

TO CASSANDRA, ANGELA, SYAKIRAH, GEETHA, IMRAN, IRA:
Once a part of 06, always a part of 06! Thanks for everything you guys have done for me, seriously. For listening to me whenever I was down, for always checking on me whenever I was in one of my emo moods. I think that although we all may not be together during lessons like before, the ironic thing is that I’m really close to you guys, and lemme say this once and for all, I think you guys are what encompasses the real meaning behind true friendship.

TO NIKHIL
